Laura Sheehan in Jenny Packham's Elizabeth

Some dresses are epoch defining. Some dresses have star quality. Some dresses have the power to make brides travel.

Jenny Packham's Elizabeth is such a dress. Only just discontinued, this dress was one of the first 'grecian' and 'floaty' styles to change brides' perception of the silhouette of a wedding gown. Referencing the past but not costume, deceptively simple and uber flattering to the neat of bust, Elizabeth inspired many homage dresses from lesser labels. As with all design classics this is bound to happen, but if you invest the original you have a beautiful heirloom collector's item destined to be future vintage.
Laura's story of dress discovery has her travelling trans-Atlantic for British icon-

"I was in your store last August with my mother and the aunt of the groom looking for a bridal gown.  I am from the California, but my husband is English and so I was staying in Haslemere for the summer.  I had spent some time looking for gowns in the US, but wasn't able to find ANYTHING like what your shop had to offer.  I fell in love with a Jenny Packham gown and made the trip back over the pond in December to do my final fitting."

A final thank you from Laura...

"My husband and I were married on April 6th in San Diego, CA on a beautiful sunny day. I received so many compliments on my dress and head piece- everyone commented they had never seen anything like it. Thank you SO much for all of your help.

I've attached some pictures, as promised. Enjoy!
Thank you again,"

Bush Telegraph

I have been thinking of how follow up to last week's emotional reaction to an unfair article by a blogger about a fellow wedding retailer. I have been asked to write a few more articles - some trade and some consumer. Here are some early thoughts and some fantastic contributions from a couple of great bloggers that are not seeking to alienate themselves from an industry they purport to be in.

In 25 years of shopkeeping there is a lot of reinvention. adaption and moving with the times to be done. In fashion retailing the no-brainer is the dresses, the sixth sense you get about what to drop and what to buy.
In 2012 a bridal shop has to look like a palace, be staffed by angels and have the robust constitution of a prize fighter with a rock hard jaw. It is no longer acceptable, if it ever was, to sport artifical flower arrangements, border wallpaper and dresses in plastic. The shops have to be as chic and individual as a boutique hotel, have a customer service policy that is faultless, be prepared to work seven days a week if one includes bridal fairs and preferably be a social media marketeer. The competition is fearsome - more shops than are necessary, fewer customers than are needed, increased activity from auction sites and High Street chains wading in.

The stealth taxes like 20% VAT mean that margins are very tight - for your £2000 you are only getting £1600 worth of dress. Silk costs are spiralling, along with fuel and utilities. The only thing you can be very sure of is that UK wages are not following suit.

Yet we all love it - weddings, shopping for weddings, writing about weddings, going to weddings. Playing dress up in a wedding dress shop is a fun, emotional and memorable experience - good or bad. I would therefore appeal for some understanding. Wedding dress shops and their owners are not the billionaire oligarchs of wedding dress world - far from it. They ought not to be treated like playgrounds. Would you walk into a Porsche dealership and complain about the price of a car? You only want to go from A to B after all... No?

Effectively wedding dress shopping is a very different, unique shopping experience.  If we get all Bill Shankly and see it as " a matter of life and death, except more important," take it and oureslves too seriously, do not communicate we are setting ourselves up for a disappointment. A very clever blogger, Quintessentially Bride added to my Blog last week "I would always try to pluck up the courage to tell someone if I felt it was more than my own neurosis and sensitivity to blame for a disappointing experience." We. retailers, brides, bloggers, journalists will create a battleground  and severely reduce our own fun and happiness without a little bit of empathy all round.

Annabel from Love My Dress has found me a great quote from Barack Obama

"Obama acknowledged the emerging influence of blogging upon society by saying "if the direction of the news is all blogosphere, all opinions, with no serious fact-checking, no serious attempts to put stories in context, then what you will end up getting is people shouting at each other across the void but not a lot of mutual understanding”

Food for thought? Let me know yours...frank questions gratefully received.

Jenny Packham 2013 - a cheeky first look

Last week New York hosted the first of the trade Bridal Markets for the new 2013 collections. I would loved to have skipped off Stateside to have a look at the collections from the US designers however I have been tied to the shop and almost literally the kitchen sink!

One of the treats of the trade show for me would have been a first glance at, Miss Bush perennial favourite, Jenny Packham's new season collection. Luckily for me Brides magazine was in NYC and has sneak peeked a few photos for us to collectively lust over long distance.

To check out the rest of their informal show images please follow the link to their website - http://www.bridesmagazine.co.uk/blog/2012/04/13/new-york-bridal-fashion-week/gallery#!photo86

Lucy Bartosik in Jenny Packham Eve

Only this very morning, through the marvel of Twitter, was I being congratulated on steering a styled photo shoot that was original. In my semi-conscious, duvet world and with the typical 'girl brushing off a compliment' way I replied it's because I've been in bridal wear a long time.

For my brides this could mean one of two things.

Firstly that I could be slightly jaded and keep rehashing old patterns to new customers year after year. (I would love to  name check a small retail chain that does this but I think that way danger lies!) Indeed very unoriginal.

Secondly, and the way of Miss Bush, is that I am constantly seeking reinventions, exploring season after season what it means to be a bride this year, this month. Bridalwear is a narrow aesthetic. True you can get married in your jeans - in which case a specific wedding dress shop is redundant. Walk into a wedding dress shop and you want to see clothes that are recognisably bridal. Whether that is the colour, the length or the fit. So one of my greatest challenges is to find dresses or garments that say 'I'm a bride' that don't look like they've come from a clip art folder. Generic or derivative dresses are all very well - I have been just recently been to a trade show where there are thousands - so I assume they must sell.

My aim is to dress brides in a frock that is fabulous on the day and remembered by their guests forever after the wedding! As such my brides and I seem to gravitate to each other and Lucy here is one such bride.

"My "Eve" dress by Jenny Packham was perfect for me.  I remember coming into your shop, after my best friend Sarah (Sarah Timothy nee Meade) urged me to try your dresses.  After trying on several enormous gowns at other shops, it was a relief to try something that I didn't feel so drowned in.  And you were the only shop that actually advised me on what type of dress suited me, something I am very grateful for!"

".. My new husband loved it too, and you can see his surprise at my dress in one of the photos below (he really is checking my dress out!).  Richard didn't know that wedding dresses existed without the enormous skirts..."

I would like to thank Lucy and Richard for sharing their photos and for Lucy for wearing Jenny Packham so beautifully - it is emphatically 'weddingy' xxx

"I would be very happy for you to include my photos on your blog. The photos are by Richard at Rightshot photography - http://www.rightshot.co.uk/...Richard and I are settling down into married life and enjoying every minute of it!

Love Lucy x x x"

Jenny Packham Saskia for Kate Ludlow

In the midst of all my Shed to Wed posts and preoccupation with The Postcard from New York event it may have slipped by readers that Miss Bush is a wedding dress shop and people buy frocks from us.

Therefore, in the blink of an eye, I seized some brand new photos straight off an email. The lovely Kate - sporting Jenny Packham's glorious Saskia - sent these over today and I have added them forthwith. A self-confessed jeans addict I think if you, like Kate, are going to pick one designer  to cure you it might as well be Jenny Packham.

"I just wanted to say a hugh 'Thank you' to everyone at Miss Bush who helped me at every stage of getting my perfect wedding dress.

Bearing in mind i wear jeans 365 days a year I was a little nervous to say the least but all of your fantastic staff made me relaxed and at ease, it was a much more enjoyable process than i ever thought it would have been, thanks to your staff." Kate Ludlow

Jenny Packham Discontinuations

It has to happen - all good frocks come to an end. Here is a list of Jenny Packham styles that HAVE to be ordered with retailers by 1st April for us to get the orders to Jenny Packham HQ. Regardless of your wedding date if  'the one' is on this list get ordering.

This also means that there could be some bargains on offer as we sell off our samples. Also, in the case of some very 'tired' samples, the dresses can be sold for relatively modest sums so the fabulous beading can be harvested.

Jenny Packham Saskia for Emma Cookson

Most of my blog posts so far have involved a massively tangential introduction. Here Emma has written such a lovely letter full of praise for Miss Bush, Amy and my Mum, Gen, that I thought for once I'd let someone else get a word in edge ways!

Dear Miss Bush team,

Happy New Year! I hope you are all well. I wanted to write and thank you for all your help with my wedding dress last year.

From my first visit to the shop I knew I wanted to purchase my dress with you. You have a beautiful boutique and each time I visited I just wanted to try more and more dresses on - it was very hard walking past them all when I arrived for my fittings!

Choosing my dress was full of surprises. Jenny Packham's 'Saskia' is a long way from the long sleeved lace dress I had in mind, but thanks to Amy's expert guidance, this was the one we arrived it. It was a very close call between that and another dress and until putting Saskia on on the day I wasn't totally sure I had made the right decision, however by the end of the day I couldn't believe I had to take it off!

It is a beautiful, beautiful dress - big thanks to Amy for making me see that and for all her patience and advice on accessories. Please pass on my thanks also to Jen for all her work on the alterations and making the dress fit someone as short as me!

We had a brilliant day, very laid back and full of laughter. I've attached a few photos in case you'd like to see the 'finished product'. Ok I'm sending more than a few as I couldn't decide which ones to send!

Thank you once again - I can't believe I won't be making trips to the shop this year :(

Best Wishes,

Emma Cookson (Bradshaw)

Jenny Packham 'Damask' Fetcham Park, Tigerlily, Eddie Judd, Ellie and me

There is less than a week to go now when Fetcham Park stops being a rumour and starts being a wedding venue. I feel invested in the place  - not only did Laura chuck out the coolest  "Mi casa es su casa" invitation since Pulp Fiction. It is also the place of Miss Bush's first shoot. First pictures to go on Love My Dress, first meeting with 'the' Penny from Tigerlily, the first project for the Fetcham Foxes, first meeting with Emma Woodhouse - The Wedding Reporter, watching Eddie Judd and efcPhotography at work for the first time- the list does, indeed,  go on and on.

Another first for the day, and for the new kid of social media, is the rapidity of shoot to publication. The following dress, Damask, by Jenny Packham has yet to be seen ANYWHERE! Anywhere apart from Jenny Packham's own rather unlovely sepia tint images. I haven't even got the dress in the shop yet.

The most fantastic opportunities lay before us to bring new  ideas in front of our potential customers. There is scope to showcase new talent, get round the 'old boy's network' and treat the glass ceiling as if it were mere clingfilm. The only cautionary tale I would add to this is that I see a lot of rubbish too. Shoots with poor fitting dresses, substandard design and the unmistakable sound of a bandwagon rolling into town. So whilst it is possible to work collaboratively standards have to be met. I love the bonhomie and the friends I'm making. I love that a shoot that only had a collective will  and a skimpy budget brings in images like the following photos.

I thank my lucky stars I fell on my feet.  I also thank my genetically blessed friend Liz and her husband John for delivering me two superstars. Ellie, the model in these photos who was scouted by Storm on the shoot, and Gina, my fab Saturday girl, are their daughters.

Ellie will be gracing the catwalk on the 30th at Fetcham's launch and Gina will be on hand too in wardrobe as a rising star now on her degree course in Costume Design at Wimbledon.
