Shed to Wed Wedding Diet Thursday

I am going to have to give an 'unofficial' weight today as I missed Weight Watchers due to a pressing engagement at The Savoy. Some rather marvellous wedding planners by the name of Temple Gregory invited me to a party to launch their new website. 6.30 - 9.30 cocktails and canapes - not strictly diet food but rude not to. Once the first few glasses of champagne had gone down I was virtually stalking the waiters with trays of canapes although I did hold myself back from the 'sweet buffet'. Of course the plan for a sensible and timely exit was abandoned when free passes for Movida night club were being handed out and I found myself in a taxi full of young'uns swigging drink from a bottle.

The rather lovely husband and wife team of Helen and Dom from Cutture  also followed on to the night club and they eventually whisked me home to Surrey as we are fairly close neighbours. I fear a kebab hunt would have ensued had they not. This did not prevent my whipping up a black pudding omlette on arrival at home. Last night it was amazing - I don't think I will be sharing the recipe...

Follow the link to the colouring page - if anyone does it and sends it to me I will publish, choose a winner and donate a sparkly prize of lovliness

Starting Stats

Week 6 Stats
Bust  441/2"
Waist 361/4
Hips 411/4
Weighing in at 12 stone 9 or 10 unofficial and a day late! (I have lost 2 or 3lbs)

Training has been sporadic this week due to a hangover on Sunday and another today. Can you now see where this weight may have come from? I did show proper grit by training at 7am on Monday morning and 7.30 Tuesday evening after a day of no food, no break at work, no staff and not so much as a coffee. I cancelled this evening's training in favour of a morning session as I think my characteristics today have been dehydration, tiredness and the zest of a sloth. I feel bad for the genial Geoff if I'm not up for some hard work and effort.

What a difference a couple of weeks and a couple of pounds makes to your self esteem. Last night I fitted easily into a red frock that hasn't been able to be done up since last July. It's a size 16. I am far from skinny or at an ideal weight. The boost to my confidence is enormous though. New hair cut, boobs ahoy and some lovely compliments meant I felt great.

See what I mean - I'm like a chick magnet now....

Shed to Wed Diet Thusday

Last week's blog post was cathartic, I had a reached a low point in body self-esteem, writing about it made me see it for exactly that. I also had to de-publish it as Annabel from Love My Dress read it and wanted to use it on her blog this week. Not entirely sure what her readership is - but its in the tens of thousands so at once I am rather chuffed she liked the piece but it is still akin to walking Gok's 'Look Good Naked' shopping centre catwalk. "Here comes Emma in her pants revealing her stats and fears."

This week my running looks more like running rather than staggering around  looking like a wheezy ex goth in search of an inhaler. I have also reached sticker success at Weight Watchers. For the perpetually slim this means you get a silver 7 sticker every time you lose half a stone. I have my first sticker and am a pound away from my 5% goal.

My own personal goal was to lose half a stone by 'proposal day.' My mother, the often charming, sometimes cantankerous, other half of the Miss Bush shareholders texted the lovely Marshy on the morning of February 29th - " are you in hiding?" Lessons to be learnt here - There is a fine line between your Mum liking your partner and actively lusting after him herself. I worry Senior Bush wanders into the latter category.

The answer is -  I didn't propose. Part of me indignant that I should have to, part of me wants to be surprised. At about five to midnight I said to Marshy - "you've nearly escaped..." He did reply, what he said was lovely and private. I am very much still on the Shed to Wed trail!

Shed to Wed Wedding Diet Thursday

This week has been an odd one, a mixed bag of dieting and fitness emotions that I think only, perhaps, women like me that struggle with weight can really get their heads round. If I was a 45 year old man, ( Surrey business owner, reasonably grown up kids) I think it would perfectly acceptable for me to be greying and carrying the portly waistline of an expense account bon-viveur.

I am not though. I am 45 year old 'spinster of this parish' in a county of well maintained, SLK driving '50 is the new 40' hotties.

So this week although the diet and fitness have gone brilliantly I still need to examine why my confidence is rocked so badly by my appearance and how to go a bit easier on myself.

Starting Stats

Bust 47"
Waist 40"
Hips 43"
Weighing in at 13 stone 6lbs

Week 4 Stats

Bust  44 3/4"
Waist 37"
Hips 42 1/4"
Weighing in at 12 stone 13lbs 8oz (ie I lost half a pound)

Total weight loss 6 1/2lbs
So training last Thursday, a run on Sunday, training Monday evening and Tuesday morning is properly impacting on the stats. Hence my record of measurements as it is a rather tiresome fact that as you burn fat and develop lean muscle you occupy less space but sometimes don't see the dramatic weight drop.

I am happy with being able to run again - albeit not as far or as fast. Whilst googling for a Caitlin Moran quote - (why the hell do I lend my favourite books out and never get them back btw) about how running was like sex I chanced across another blog Run Fat Bitch Run  and fell upon this -

"Caitlin Moran’s brilliantly funny column in the Times magazine on Saturday is on the same page. She too is a working mum, who just wants to fit into her size 12 clothes - I bet she doesn’t give a shit about her bingo wings (sorry Caitlin if you don’t in fact have them or do, and care very much). She doesn’t have the time to consider that if she had done 7minutes of strength training with weights at the gym beforehand she would have burnt off more calories on her four mile jog! She wants as many endorphins as she can get in the shortest possible time and she knows that running is the answer. For many of us ordinary women who don’t have the time or money to devote to muscle sculpture, let alone afford gym membership, strength and resistance training is something we cannot afford to waste time faffing over. "

Effectively my point - now I have battled my fitness up to running capacity - I should be able to run more, further, faster, longer and with each stride drop weight quicker and feel better emotionally. It is, when you are ready, better for good mental health than anything else I know.

The T Shirt I am ordering ...

And whilst I am on the subject of Caitlin Moran, quotes and clothes this really sums up what want wrong with my week end and why my much anticipated love-in was an unmitigated disaster

“When a woman says, ‘I have nothing to wear!’, what she really means is, ‘There’s nothing here for who I’m supposed to be today.”
― Caitlin Moran, How To Be A Woman

I was expecting to be whisked away to Brighton on Saturday for a (surprise) romantic but probably fun and silly night out. Brighton is great because although it is jam packed with cool, green, trendy, student, gay fantastic-ness it is also accepting of end of the pier day-trippers and less than cool people that want to eat fish and chips and look at the sea.

I packed accordingly from my very limited, middle-age clothes that fit. I packed Saturday morning before work and thought no more. As the lovely Marshy came to collect me I found out about the change of plan. It was now London. I was immediately downcast. I wanted salt air and casual.

Perhaps only girls can understand this and hence why the Caitlin quote has such resonance. I had nothing to wear for what I suppose or believe London wants me to be. It got worse - when it should have got better. We were booked in at The Dean Street Townhouse . It is lovely, truly beautiful. The location is perfect for a hip, urban night out - had I known on Thursday or even Friday that this was where we going I could have ransacked everyone I know's wardrobes plus every shop in Guildford. I could have dressed for who I was supposed to be. What I arrived in was a pair of my daughter's leggings, a jumper a bought at Christmas when I peaked weight-wise, a pair of boots with the sole coming away and a fake fur coat too short to hide the jumper.

I felt hideous, fat, old, unfashionable - generally foul. Whatever I did and however I tried I just felt worse and worse. So a room service dinner and an early morning exit was the result. Lots of money wasted with the additional guilt burden that I ruined Marshy's weekend.

I dispense advice daily about body confidence and clothes. I agree, I need to take some of my own advice here. I have punished myself for being fat with a bad wardrobe, I have put new purchases on hold until I have lost a few pounds. I know that with a good frock, hair and make up I can rock 13 stone as well as I can 9!

I will not endanger my relationship with this again - providing I'm given a bloody clue where we are going!

Shed to Wed Wedding Diet Thursday

Week Three. All things considered this week the diet has not been derailed...

Starting Stats

Bust 47"
Waist 40"
Hips 43"
Weighing in at 13 stone 6lbs

Week 3 Stats

Bust 45"
Waist 371/2"
Hips 43" ( if I was being particular I could shave a couple of mil' off this!)
Weighing in at 13 stone (1lb off!)

Obviously my glorious success of 4lbs last week lulled me into a false sense of security and three big nights, in the Booze Britain sense, did not help. Total weight loss is now 6lb - one pound short of a sticker! Yes - you really get a sticker!

However a pound is a pound. I googled images of 1lb of fat and arrived at nasty yellow lumps that will put you off your lunch. So I googled 1lb of Jam instead.

Two Cooks One Kitchen

So the architects of my undoing?

Thursday it was a Scentsy candle Party - I took a bottle, I drank a bottle!

Friday was the Mosimann's champagne at The Designer Wedding Show

Saturday Carolanne undertaking the Phil Collins 'InThe Air Tonight' Kareoke Drum Challenge
Saturday was a 4am finish with Gayle of Bloomingayles, Carolanne of Carolanne Armstrong MUA and The Lovely Marshy

So I obviously had to revert to apples, soup and a modicum of lean protein to reach fighting weight for last nights 'weigh-in'! It may interest you to know that a brief scan on Google revealed I am currently, should I want to enter the ring as a boxer, Cruiserweight! This is one down from Heavyweight. Oh dear.

Onwards and downwards...

A friend of mine (that would be you Jackie!) asked me to explain myself regarding a choice of dress I wanted to wear - namely Suzanne Neville's Harmony. To clear up any misunderstanding here is one of my Bridols (Bridal style idol) wearing said dress.

Laura Brace in Suzanne Neville's masterpiece of understatement Harmony. Silk crepe and silk duchesse - I desire this!

Shed to Wed - Wedding Diet Thursday

Week Two of 'Shed to Wed '- how's it all going you may ask?

Well fat-fans, a mighty 4lbs have been lost this week! Plus the measurements are looking much better.
Remember how the stats looked two weeks ago - alarming!

Bust 47"
Waist 40"
Hips 43"
Weighing in at 13 stone 6lbs

Today's weights and measures...

Bust 451/2"
Waist 381/2"
Hips 43"
Weighing in at 13 stone 1lb

...or, in pictorial form, this week I have lost the equivalent of an oven ready chicken adding to last week's 1lb of butter!

This week's weight loss

Last week's weight loss

Finally Weight Watchers have organised my log-on details so I may take a more 'on message' approach  and count points! Success I am putting down to strategic changes -

Swapped wine for the odd Moscow Mule http://www.esquire.com/drinks/moscow-mule-drink-recipe

Avoided The Bakery in Ripley with it's gravitational pull towards pies and sausage roll and substituted my traditional Sunday lunch with a lighter variant.

Working with Geoff of Body Influences is going well. I can feel he is upping the pace. As he is such a love you feel you want to work hard for him. Hence my resolution and grit which meant my Sunday morning run was more picturesque than usual!

Yellow is the colour of the season...
Potential bumps on the road to svelteness this week

Tonight -a girl's night/candle party -  dear Lord I might need a drink
Friday - Designer Wedding Show - Champagne and Bento boxes anyone?
Saturday - Supper at mine with some fab' wedding world girls - cocktail shaker called for!

Mantras to be adopted while training "I want to wear a Packham" followed by "Harmony, harmony, harmony" - not cerebral - just the name of a Suzanne Neville dress I'd like...

Shed to Wed Wedding Diet Thursday

So how has the spectacular wedding diet and fitness campaign come on?

It has been singularly successful! I have lost 1lb in weight and 1" from my waist. Now clearly this isn't a giant loss but let's look at the evidence...

Dinner

Thursday Burns Night Supper
Friday Rotisserie Chicken and wings from Sainsburys
Saturday Chinese Take Away
Sunday Roast beef, Yorkshire Pudding and Marshy's homemade profiteroles
Monday Left-overs - stir fried beef and veg
Tuesday Harvester Birthday Meal with William (age 12)
Wednesday Soup

All things considered I am fairly satisfied!

However daytime has been virtuous! Breakfast has been porridge or fruit. Lunch - if possible to get some - has been veg soup or a Tuna Light Lunch - like Sheba catfood right down to the shape of the tin.

Running, boxing, kick-boxing, stretching and sweating are starting to wake up some muscles. I am physically tired rather than exhausted by stress or made dozy by wine.  I even found time for an unseasonal leg shave - followed by heaps of Clarins' moisturiser. Bare shins on show in January are demanding.

This week I have swapped diet tips with Miss Bush brides to be. The most gorgeous having slimmed from a 22 to a toned and athletic 10/12. This amazing weight loss was achieved gradually with plenty of running and nurturing. Believe me if I get the chance to share her wedding photos I will. Another bride had a cautionary tale about Lighter Life, effective but essentially starvation resulting in extreme sickness and a gall stone.

Looks like the tortoise approach may be the most effective long term - although I might secretly like to see the scales tell a more dramatic tale next week.

Fancy legitimately punching and kicking someone and are in the Woking area. Give Geoff a call.

Shed to Wed Wedding Diet Thursday

I have been to Weight Watchers and have discovered that I weigh 6lbs more than I feared. I am tipping the scales at 13stone 6lbs. This is approximately 3 stone more than when I met the lovely Marshy. This is also a stone more than when I last considered dieting.

Picture from Little Britain of Bubbles Devere taken from www.hbo.com. This is also a great substitute for an artist's impression of my self-image sporting the 'Vintage meets Grecian' trend.

My lovely and very 'on message' Weight Watcher's group leader Rachel suggested we measure ourselves too. Oddly enough this has come as a far greater shock.

This week at Miss Bush's I measured a porcelain doll of a bride. A tiny, perfectly proportioned woman with a 22 1/2 waist. This is unusual but it has served to give me a huge comparison between my stats

Bust 47" (I know I am staggered too - no wonder my back aches!
Waist 40" (Aghast - in the diabetes risk bracket and the kind of measurement that takes me into some   uncomfortable regions on a bridal size chart!)
Hips 43" (this is supposed to be my small bit!)

This means I would have to order myself a Maggie Sottero size 18/20 and they are generous.

I feel taken aback. All the stats are slightly grimmer than I thought.

However, there was a very lovely woman at Weight Watchers that had already lost 30lbs and a bride that visited me late yesterday that had lost 2 stone with Weight Watchers and bought a size 10 Jenny Packham sample! Clearly the programme works and added to the trainer Geoff's regime I hope to make an indent in these stats fast.

Rachel, our Beloved Leader, has given me a record chart to fill in that suggests I can lose 5% of me by week 7.

I however have an alternative target - significant improvement by the 29th February. The day, should I so chose, I could propose. This is just over a month - time to get the trainers on!

Annabel from Love My Dress has looked into the traditions of this - check out her blog post on the subject and where I shamelessly nicked this image!
